Successful Summer Reading Program Kick Off

The “Tails and Tales” Summer Reading Program Kick-Off was a wonderful success! The first program was Animalogy, a highly interactive program that introduces animals to children and adults they do not normally see up close. Bob Tarter, director and wildlife biologist, came with exotic animals and reptiles most of us only see on television. Children and adults got a look at the southwest Gila monster with its desert patterned body, the Green Iguana that uses its ability to blend into the jungle vegetation and a ‘third-eye’ that can detect changes in lightness and darkness and sense movement. Audiences got a wonderful opportunity to touch a tiny fruit bat with a sweet tooth, and pet a cute prickly hedgehog. From South America, children were treated to a close, but safe look at a Buteo Hawk and finally children met a black Labrador puppy who is “in-training” to interact with special-needs children and adults as well general audiences. In total, there were close to 100 children and over 70 adults attending the first in-person Summer Reading Program offered by the Bienville Parish Library since the COVID shutdown in March of 2020!

Below are the program times for each library:

  • Arcadia at 10:00 a.m.
  • Ringgold at 2:00 p.m.

  • Castor at 10:00 a.m.
  • Saline at 2:00 p.m.

This is a new Summer Reading Program reward and there are ten brag tags to snag! Preventing the “summer slide” continues to be the main objective of summer reading programs. This new reading incentive gives your reader extra motivation to read and collect all ten tags. It will impress teachers with how many books/pages they read during their summer vacation!

The 2021 Summer Reading Program is designed to help:

  • Children be motivated to read.
  • Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.
  • Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.
  • Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
  • Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.
  • Most of all – HAVE FUN!
