Castor Branch – the Little Library with a Big Heart

BIENVILLE PARISH LIBRARY – CASTOR BRANCH THE LITTLE LIBRARY WITH A BIG HEART!

Deep in the lush timber pine forests of Bienville Parish, sits the small town of Castor. Situated on rural Highway 507 is the Bienville Parish Library Castor Branch, a little library with a huge heart! Originally, the Castor Branch was a four-classroom elementary school. Rather than destroy a piece of Castor history, the school building and the land were donated by the School Board and renovated by the Castor Historical Association. The renovations were completed, and the building opened as a Bienville Parish Library branch in 2009. In 2018, a large meeting room was added for civil and club meetings, and a place to host library events and programs.

MEET THE STAFF

Branch Manager, Robin Stevens Word is the beating heart behind the Castor Branch. Her day begins well before opening, and continues into the evening, long after the lights are turned off for the day. Word is always thinking of educational activities, fun and engaging programs to excite Castor patrons of all ages.

At circulation is Kaitlyn Bryan, a young married mom with a beautiful little titian-haired girl, named Piper. As members of the community of Castor, Kaitlyn and Robin have taken their enthusiasm and boundless energies to ensure their neighborhood library is warm and inviting to the community the library serves. Together they make a wonderful team!

The Castor Branch is the place to go for more than just books, DVDs, and audio CDs – There are here public-use computers with Internet, places to study, a nice variety of adult and juvenile non-fiction books and reference materials for students to use. Robin and Kaitlyn both have a great rapport with the local public and private schools, and they’ve worked very hard to nurture those relationships with the principals and teachers in the Castor area. The ladies at Castor have seasonal programming that includes contests, as well as arts and crafts projects to take home or complete at the library. They’ve also engaged the homeschool parents, making sure they are included in all the special programs for adults that are fun and entertaining along with interesting activities for children, tweens and teens that introduce them to love of reading.

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY

The Castor Branch was the first library to celebrate that one of their patron families completed the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program. They have more young families well on their way to completing the program, reading 400 and 500 books and will no doubt complete the program soon!

If you haven’t visited your neighborhood Castor Branch, you should make the trip and get to know your favorite librarians and members of the Castor community, Robin Word and Kaitlyn Bryan!
