Yesterday, Bayli Quick, curator for Briarwood Nature Preserve, just south of Saline, returned from Natchitoches and found the woods burning around the entrance gate and near the Johnson’s residence.
Ms. Quick said, “I pulled in from Highway 9 and found the woods on fire. I knew it wasn’t a control burn so I headed to Mrs. Jessie and Mr. Richard [Johnson’s] to find their phone lines were out so they couldn’t have called 911. I immediately called and within 10-15 minutes we had fire trucks out helping put out the fire. I arrived at just the right time before any structures were damaged.
I am grateful for the speedy response. I want to give a tremendous thank you to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, District 2 Fire Department from Bienville Parish, and Districts 2 and 9 from Natchitoches parish, SWEPCO, and the Forestry Service for being here quickly today at Briarwood.
As a reminder for all individuals, although the state burn ban is currently lifted, please be mindful of what you burn and when you burn it. A small fire burning leaves could easily start a forest fire. This fire was started from a dead limb or tree falling on the local power line.”
