A Bienville Parish man is behind bars in Webster Parish, following a routine traffic stop that revealed drugs.

Demetre James Smith, 40, of the 1900 block of Pearl Street, Gibsland, was arrested by Minden Police for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and as a fugitive from Shreveport Police.

Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Ofc. Ben Sparks observed a red GMC Envoy failing to stop at a sign on the corner of Bayou Avenue and Weston Street in Minden. When Ofc. Sparks initiated the stop, Smith, the driver, seemed nervous while attempting to locate documents in the vehicle.

Sparks asked Smith to exit the vehicle and gained consent to search. During the search, the officer reportedly located two pipes used to smoke methamphetamine, along with one glass container with methamphetamine inside. Dispatch advised that Smith had an active bench warrant through Shreveport Police for failure to appear in court.

He was taken into custody and booked at Minden Police Department.
