A traffic stop on a Minden city street has resulted in a Bossier City man’s arrest for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and as a fugitive from Bienville Parish.
Chief of Police Jared McIver said Deonte Dereko Warren was taken into custody after Sgt. Christopher Cayer observed a traffic violation and stopped the suspect on the Sibley Rd. McIver said Sgt. Cayer found more in the situation that a traffic violation.
“Sgt. Cayer checked with dispatch and learned the suspect’s license was suspended and, according to procedure, had him step out of the vehicle. The suspect was pacing back and forth nervously, repeatedly failed to follow instructions and attempted to return to the vehicle several times,” Chief McIver said.
According to his arrest report, Sgt. Cayer sought permission to search the vehicle due to the suspicious actions of the suspect. When permission was denied, Lt. Brandon Curry and K9 Tigo were summoned to the scene for an “open air sniff” and Tigo positively alerted on the vehicle.
“When Tigo alerted on the vehicle, Sgt. Cayer conducted a search and located a Glock handgun inside,” McIver said.
Sgt.Cayer was advised that Warren had an active warrant through the Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office and he was transported to the city police department.
Warren’s criminal history reportedly shows a 2006 conviction for distribution of cocaine, and that he was placed on probation for simple burglary, illegal use of a weapon and distribution of cocaine.
