LDWF’s “Snakes of Louisiana” Guide Identifies Venomous, Nonvenomous Snakes

As temperatures continue to rise, snakes will be on the move.  Many people are of the opinion that “the only good snake is a dead snake.”  However, of the 36 different types of native snakes shown on the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries guide, only 6 are venomous.  They include:

  • Eastern Coralsnake
  • Pygmy Rattlesnake
  • Copperhead
  • Cottonmouth
  • Timber Rattlesnake
  • Eastern Diamond-Backed Rattlesnake
