Robert W. Bethea, DVM, died at his home Thursday, July 2, 2026. He was 80.

Bethea was born Jan. 13, 1946, in Baton Rouge, where he was raised. Following high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. He later attended LSU, graduating with a degree in animal science.

In his 20s, driven by a lifelong desire to visit Australia, Bethea spent four years traveling across that country. During his time there, he worked a variety of jobs, including surveying and working on cattle stations. After returning to the United States, he worked as a bartender, carpenter and general contractor.

An avid animal lover, particularly of dogs, Bethea returned to LSU at age 43 to attend veterinary school, finding his true calling as a veterinarian.

He was buried in a family cemetery he established at his camp in Vernon Parish. His quiet passing and burial reflected the private, unassuming way he lived.

Bethea is survived by his wife, Lisa Prichard Bethea; a son, Jed Bethea; two sisters, Kay Bethea and Jan Kindred; and a cousin, Kitti Rester.
