Schools across the parish celebrated yesterday in honor of Read Across America Day, also known as Dr Seuss Day.

March 2 is author, illustrator and cartoonist Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday. He is best known by his pen name Dr. Seuss. In his lifetime he has authored over 60 children’s books, many of which were critically acclaimed, and sold over 600 million copies. 

This U.S. holiday has been celebrated every year since 1997 since it was first inaugurated by the National Education Association (NEA). This organization represents educators across the country and provides them with tools to assist in getting their students excited about reading and motivating them to use reading as a way to improve their grades and test scores.  

Schools have gotten creative this year with their celebrations by hosting events with guest readers and authors and having dress up days, giving students a chance to show off their favorite Dr. Seuss gear. Some schools in the parish sent home a Dr. Seuss book with their students to read at home with their families. Others have had the opportunity to feature a couple movies that have been inspired by some of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books including, “The Lorax.” A select few even had the chance to try some green eggs and ham.  

On Wednesday, March 1, President Joe Biden released a proclamation for “Read Across America Day,” recognizing the value of literacy to our democracy and essentialness to our country’s future. 

Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
